媒介控制中心鼓勵人們保持寵物的跳蚤藥物更新，戶外活動時使用防蚊蟲噴霧，並清理家周圍可能吸引動物的垃圾和食物廢料。定期檢查他們的寵物和動物的床鋪是否有跳蚤和排泄物，即“跳蚤糞”，這通常是跳蚤侵擾的第一個跡象。戶外區域應保持無積水、寵物食品或樹上掉落的水果，並清除可能成為常見病媒庇護所的灌木叢。
